What is cholesterol?
Cholesterol is a fatty substance (lipid) found in the blood. It is required to build and maintain cell membranes and other important functions. Body makes all it needs and gets from the food. Ideal blood cholesterol level is “below 200 mg/dL” (milligrams per deciliter of blood).
Types of cholesterol-
- LDL (Bad cholesterol) It stores cholesterol in blood stream and increases risk of heart stroke and heart disease.
- HDL (Good cholesterol) It regulates LDL storage and promotes excretion. It lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke.
High cholesterol levels are referred as hypercholesterolemia. It is unhealthy and cause many dangerous and serious problems like heart diseases. It starts to build up in arteries and narrows them, reducing the blood flow. This results in blood clots and cause heart attacks and strokes.
Causes of High Cholesterol-
- Eating meat,butter,cheese and other foods come from animals.
- Eating too much fried food like cookies,chips etc.
- Excessive drinking
- Disease like kidney,liver disease, high blood pressure.
- Lack of physical activity
- Family History of of high cholesterol also increases the possibility of the same.
- It starts to rise after age of 20.
Home Remedies for Cholesterol-
1.Multi grain Flour ( Aata )
Multi grain Aata is too much helpful in controlling high cholesterol levels. This multi grain flour can be made by using wheat, soya bean,Chana (chick pea), Jowar (sorghum), Bajra (Pearl Millet), Makai (corn), Cholai ( Amaranth ), Jau (barley), Shingade (water Caltrop).
2.Special GRUEL (Dalia)
Gruel is another important remedy that is too much beneficial in controlling cholesterol. Use following of the ingredients to make Gruel . It is also helpful in obesity, calcium and diabetes.
Ingredients : 500 grams of Wheat, Pearl Mllet, Rice and Moong bean each & 20 grams of Ajwain
3.Drink Warm water
Taking a glass of warm water early in the morning is very effective in controlling cholesterol . It is also very helpful in controlling obesity. Also avoid eating fatty and fried foods.
Yoga is another important way to control cholesterol. Doing Kapalbhati pranayama, Anulom Vilom on regular basis will lower cholesterol surprisingly. Perform these Yoga asanas for 15 to 30 minutes. Kapalbhati Pranayama is most important.
5.Bottle Gourd juice ( Lauki )
Bottle Gourd juice also helps in controlling cholesterol levels. Remember that it must not be bitter in taste.
Fruits like lemon and range are anti cholesterol foods. These fruits reduces the cholesterol effectively. These fruits with the help of liver recycles the cholesterol present in the body. All the vitamin rich fruits are helpful in controlling cholesterol levels.
Flax seed is very useful in reducing cholesterol levels.You can take 20 to 40 grams of Flax seeds to control cholesterol. Taking Flax seeds with mixing it in “Mattha” (plain buttermilk) will help you in controlling cholesterol. Flax seed oil is much better than olive oil. In comparison to olive oil it contains 3.50% more Omega .
