So, what is immunization?

  • In layman terms, immunization means to add immunogenic to your body which protects you against particle disease/disorder

It is normally said, if you take this vaccine- You are immune! (Which means chances to catch up that disease becomes negligible!

Which vaccinations are available currently in India?

WHO- World Health Organization has approved couple of vaccines which are given according to a particular schedule which is followed in different stages of life.

Here is the list at a glance for VACCINATION:-

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Hepatitis E
  • Tetanus
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Typhoid
  • Dengue
  • Polio
  • Rotavirus
  • Rabies
  • Yellow fever
  • Influenza
  • Malaria

Immunization of these vaccines has a schedule (Some of them are optional while some of them are compulsory and your healthcare professional will guide you further but here is a glance which can give you a idea how does a immunization schedule looks like!

(1) Vaccine- BCG + OPV

Disease- T.B and polio

Age- At the time of birth

(2) Vaccine- DPT + OPV + IPV + HBV + HiB

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, polio, Hepatitis A, Influenza B

Age- 1.5 month

(3) Vaccine- DPT + OPV + IPV + HBV + HiB

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, polio, Hepatitis A, Influenza B

Age- 2.5 month

(4) Vaccine- DPT + OPV + IPV + HBV + HiB

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, polio, Hepatitis A, Influenza B

Age- 3.5 month

* Note:- DPT + OPV + IPV + HBV + HiB vaccines are given in the interval of 4 weeks for immunization to kick in.

(5) Vaccine- Measles

Disease- Measles

Age- 9 months

(6) Vaccine- MMR

Disease- Measles, Mumps, Rubella

Age- 15 months

(7) Vaccine- DPT + OPV + IPV + 1 booster HiB

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, polio.

Age- 18 months

(8) Vaccine- DPT + 2nd booster OPV

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, polio.

Age- 4.5-5 years

(9)  Vaccine- Tdap/Td

Disease-  Diptheria, Pertusis, Tetanus

Age- 10 years

Some vaccines are not compulsory. They are only given under special circumstances which is decided by your health care professional.

(1)  Vaccine- Meningococcal

Disease-  Meningitis

Age- 2 years

Booster dose- Every 2 to 5 years

(2)  Vaccine- Influenza

Disease-  Flu

Age- Can be given after 9 years of age and it should be given every year.

(3)  Vaccine- Rabies

Disease-  Rabies

Age- 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 days after birth

If you give proper vaccinations to your babies at the right time, then you can protect your child from lot of serious complications!

Not just your babies, adults too need immunization!

Tetanus- Required when you have some injury in which you bleed.

Pneumococcal vaccine- Once at 55 years of age and then in every 10 years.

Influenza vaccine- Once at 55 years and then every year which protects you against flu.

HPV (Human Papilloma virus) vaccine- 3 doses ( 0 dose, After 1 month and after 6 months) for 10 years and above which protects you against cervical cancer.
