Ushnodaka therapy is a very famous treatment that is followed in Ayurveda and it is effective too. In this method, drinking water either in hot water form or in a slightly warm mode is practiced. In simple words, it can be explained as warm water drinking therapy. This is widely practiced in Ayurveda.

What are the Benefits of drinking hot water?

Lots of health benefits of drinking water. This method of practice involves two key principles they are, to drink hot water or warm water on a regular basis and the other is to make the digestive fire or Agni in active mode. When you have a stronger digestive fire, it helps in a stronger immune system. Thus it makes our body healthy and fit.

Mode of action:

Normally our digestive system has a fire in it; it has to be kept properly functioning. Drinking cold water or cold juices reduces this natural digestive fire or Agni in our digestive system. Thus it may cause digestive problems, bloating and tiredness easily. So try to intake hot water or warm water that will help in restart the digestive fire and make it function properly. Thus good bowel movements are attained and detoxification to the whole body is done by practicing this hot water therapy.

Vitiated vata is the cause for most of the body pains. This is proved statement that is believed in Ayurveda. Bloating and blockage are due to vata imbalances. Thus these imbalances in vata lead to pain.

Warm water has a particular property named as deepana; this property leads to our digestive channel expansion. Thereby digestive juice flow is improved naturally and elements in the body are improved.

Note: Anything too much intake can be a danger, too many intakes of hot water is not advisable. Since when you intake in a huge quantity of hot water it would result in an imbalance of other doshas. When you have your favorite food briyani, and then don’t forget to have hot water or warm water. This helps in melting fat, so fat deposition is prevented.


This warm water drinking is an ancient method practiced in Ayurveda; it helps in cleaning and hydrating tissues, flushing toxins out from the lymphatic system and finally helps out in softening the hard tissues. So take hot water between meals to flush out water-soluble toxins from the body. So take hot water during meals and in night times for good results of warm water therapy. This hot water is advised in Panchakarma treatment and any food that is made up of ghee, after consumption of that food have hot water, and it is good for your digestive support and avoids heaviness in the stomach and thus prevents the onset of digestive disorders.
