HYPOCHROMIC MICROCYTIC ANAEMIA SYMPTOMS, CAUSES AND TREATMENT

Anaemia started to occur before four thousand years it, on an averagely 660 million people gets affected each year on worldwide with anaemia. During anaemia there will be lower of red blood cells, thus haemoglobin level get’s reduced. If you see the possible causes for anaemia it can be genetics, alcohol toxicity, blood loss chronically and huge usage of medicines. When deficiency of iron occurs in our body, it leads to unable to produce sufficient amount of haemoglobin. This leads to the development of hypochromic microcytic anaemia. In this hypochromic microcytic anaemia there will be less amount of RBC. When the red blood cells are found small than the normal size it is said to be microcystosis.

Anaemia as everyone knows that, our body has less amount of RBC at this condition. The required haemoglobin when not able to produce by our body that can lead to a condition called microcytic anaemia. Haemoglobin can be produced from iron, thus our body needs good amount of iron to produce haemoglobin. When you do not eat iron rich foods in diet and have deficiency of iron that will result in the formation of microcytic anaemia.

Symptoms of Hypochromic Microcytic Anaemia

At first you may not get the symptoms of microcytic anaemia, only later on you can see the red blood cells getting reduced in size and it becomes lowered. Which further lead to the damage of tissues? In the advance level of this anaemia you have tiredness, fatigue, extreme weakness. Then your stamina shall get reduced and also you get shortness of breath. There will be paleness on skin tone. Dizziness at all times becomes more commonly found. If all these symptoms continuously for more than two weeks period, then you must consult a physician.

There are three kinds of hypochromic microcytic anaemia these are iron deficiency anaemia, thalassaemia and sideroblastic anaemia. In this 3 types iron deficiency anaemia is the most common one. Which occurs due to deficiency of iron in diet? When severe bleeding seen in women during periods, that can lead to the bleeding of gastro-intestinal tract and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Pregnant lady get this iron deficiency anaemia as commonly occurring one.

Thalassemia is also an anaemia that comes from family history, here mutation in gene will be. That affects the production of haemoglobin in our body. In sideroblastic anaemia also there will be mutation of gene. It is also inherited genetically. Here iron production in our body is impacted.

Non-chromic microcytic anaemia

In this type anaemia there will be normal range of haemoglobin in the red blood cells. The hue of the red blood cells will be either pale in colour or deep colour of the red blood cells. When anaemia characterized by inflammation and chronic anaemia is termed as non-chromic microcytic anaemia. This type anaemia is seen among AIDs patients, tuberculosis patients, rheumatoid arthritis patient, diabetes mellitus, cancer, renal disease and Crohn’s disease. These health conditions prevent the proper functioning RBCs.

  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Thalassemia
  • Anaemia due to chronic diseases
  • Lead poison
  • Deficiency of vitamin-B6(pyridoxine)
  • From the onset of childhood times these kind of anaemia
  • Sideroblastic anaemia
  • Deficiency of copper
  • Excess level of zinc
  • Drug abuse

Diagnosis of hypochromic microcytic anaemia

Peripheral blood smear, in this MCV level will be less than 83 micron.

Treatment of hypochromic microcytic anaemia

First you need to find out the root cause of this hypochromic microcytic anaemia, and then only you can treat it correctly. There is a need for supplementation of vitamin-C for better iron absorption and supplement of iron is necessary. The blood loss that to be found whether it is acute or chronic level then proceed with the right treatment at right time. In case of women affected with this kind anaemia, then hormone therapy is given, also usage of birth control pills. If this condition gets severe and severe blood loss is found that would result in failure of heart function, this condition needs immediate medical attention with transfusion of blood.

Prevention of hypochromic microcytic anaemia

The leading cause for hypochromic microcytic anaemia is deficiency of iron; this condition can be prevented by taking iron rich foods in diet. Iron rich foods are red meats, green leafy vegetables, poultry, kale, Brussels sprouts, raisins, red peppers, broccoli and strawberries. Try to include plenty of vitamin-C rich foods in diet for good absorption of iron in body. You can get good amount of vitamin-C from citrus fruits, amla, guava etc.
