Vata dosha pacifying diet

In the previous article we had discussed about different constitutions and what aggravates Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha.

In this article we will discuss about diet to pacify vata dosha.

Vata dosha is perhaps the most common dosha imbalance seen in most of the individuals.

If one dosha is a warm dosha then other dosha is a cold dosha and this is commonly happening.

Vata dosha is basically dealing with an element FIRE. If this dosha is imbalanced, digestive fire gets disturbed.

Here is the Vata dosha pacifiying diet :-

(1) Cereals

Vata Dosha

Prefer whole cooked grains and un yeast things.

Best cereals to eat :- Cooked oats, Wheat Daliya, Rice.

Eat in small amounts:- Amaranth/Rajgira, Brown rice, Barley.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Buckwheat, Corn.

(2) Meat


Limit meat consumption. Soup broth is okay if the patients are on liquid diet.

Best meat to eat:- White chicken meat, egg whites, mutton.

Eat in small amounts:- Beef, seafood.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Shellfish.

(3) Fruits

Vata Dosha

Have ripened and sweet fruits to balance your dosha. 

Best fruits to eat:- Apricot, avocado, Ripen bananas, dates, figs, sweet mango, plum, strawberries, raisins.

Eat in small amounts:-Apple, raw bananas, watermelon.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Dry fruits, olives, oranges.

(4) Vegetables

Vata Dosha

Cooked vegetables are more nourishing. Green leafy vegetables should be preferred in hot summer which helps in avoiding constipation.

Best vegetables to eat:- Bottle gourd, cilantro, corn, leeks, okra, cooked onion, potato.

Eat in small amounts:- Alfafa sprouts, asparagus, beets, bean sprouts, brinjal, cauliflower, mushroom, parsley, raw lettuce, sweet potato, sour tomato, green peas.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Artichoke, capsicum, cabbage, raw onion.

(5) Legumes

Vata Dosha

Beans increases vata but if combined with garlic, coriander, cumin to reduce vata dosha. Compatibility depends from person to person and manage the digestion.

Best legumes to eat:- Moong.

Eat in small amounts:- Adhuki beans, black lentils, tofu.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Chole or chickpeas, Soy beans, Kidney beans.

(6) Nuts + Seeds

Vata Dosha

Soak nuts and seeds for 8 hours before consuming it. Avoid peanut butter other nut butters are okay.

Best Nuts to eat:- Almonds soaked overnight, Cashews soaked overnight, Tender coconut is okay, Sunflower seeds.

Eat in small amounts:- Lotus seeds or makhana, pistas, pumpkin seeds.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Peanuts.

(7) Oils

Vata Dosha

It is important to include healthy oils in your routine to avoid dryness which is a very common issue in vata dosha. They are generally heavy and nourishing.

Best oils to eat:- Coconut oil, ghee, olive oil, sunflower oil.

Eat in small amounts:- Almond oil, castor oil, corn oil, flaxseed oil, sesame oil, Sunflower oil.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Mustard oil, peanut oil, safflower oil, margarine oil.

(8) Spices

Vata Dosha

Use it in extremely moderate amounts.

Best Spices to eat:- Caraway, Cardamom, turmeric,fennel, dill seeds, fennel seeds, lemongrass.

Eat in small amounts:- Anise, basil, cinnamon, nutmeg, oregano, star anise, thyme.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Hing, kali mirch, raw garlic, dry ginger.


Vata Dosha

Take it in room temperature, not ice cold.

Best beverages to eat:- Chamonile tea, mildy spiced tea, mint, coriander.

Eat in small amounts:- Dilute fruit juices, soda, buttermilk.

Eat in very less quantities or avoid:- Alcohol, coffee, soft drinks, black tea, tomato juice.

These points should be taken care of before planning any meals for someone who has vata dosha very predominant.

Ideal meal plan to follow:-

Early morning:- soaked nuts + seeds from the ones which is mentioned above. Try to minimize the ones which is mentioned.

After 30 mins of early morning snack – Coriander tea/Rose petal tea.

How to make coriander tea?

1 tsp of coriander seeds (grounded) in a glass of water and reduce it to half. Strain and enjoy luke warm.

Breakfast:- Cereal (Cornflakes/oats/muesli) + Coconut milk/Almond milk/Soy milk.

Lunch :- Cooked vegetable (You can choose from the ones given in the best to use vegetable section), carbohydrate source (Jowar/Bajra/Ragi) + Protein sources (Minimise meat portion as given) + Boiled Sweet potato. Khichadi will be a preferable option and top it up with ghee to make it a complete nutrient rich meal.

Dinner:- It is okay to have it same as lunch but you can add more fresh soups with addition of ghee. Having lemon juice with meals helps in better digestion.

  • Chew on ajwain or fennel seeds before bed to enhance better digestion.
  • Having boiled raisin skimmed cow’s milk or almond or soy milk can also help.
  • These tips will help in balancing vata dosha and will also keep pitta and kapha dosha also in balance.
